I bought Xiaomi Mipad last week. It’s a price for value tablet. It’s equipped with NVIDIA Tegra K1 with quad-core processor and 2 GB RAM, very nice for gaming purpose. However, I did notice slight lag on the UI, especially while doing some heavy multitasking (opening lot of browser tab and applications). I installed Greenify on my LG G2 and it has worked wonder to keep my phone out of sluggishness. To make Greenify work effectively, it needs root access and it’s the reason I want to root my Mipad as well. And there are several hundreds reason also why you want to root your Tablet/phone ☺

Disclaimer: I’m just sharing the way I root my Mi-pad. It maybe useful for others, but it may not work on your tablet, especially if the specification is different. I also understand that there’s other alternative on how to root. It’s up to you guys. One thing for sure, I don’t take any responsibility of what happen to your Mi-pad ☺

Here’s my Mipad specifications:

  • Mi-pad Global Version (bought in Indonesia)
  • Stable ROM version: V6.4.3 MIUI 6
  • Mi Pad with Stock MI-Recovery

Install Developer version of MIUI ROM

There were people trying to root their Mi-pad by directly flashing update.zip, without applying Developer ROM first, and it worked. I haven’t try it myself, I just follow the instructions I got from the Internet, that in order to root using update.zip I must use Developer ROM version first (maybe you can help experimenting rooting without flashing developer ROM)

1. Make sure you backup all your data first. You’ll lose all your data

2. Download Mi-pad developer from http://en.miui.com/download-229.html. I downloaded version 5.5.1

3. Rename the downloaded file to update.zip. Please make sure you all lowercase for the filename, otherwise it won’t work

4. Copy the file update.zip to the root folder of the internal storage (‘Computer\MI PAD\Internal storage’, if you use your PC)

5. Reboot to recovery mode, by restarting/powering up your tablet and holding volume-up. Keep it pressed until mi.com logo shown

6. After recovery screen shown, select english language (navigate using volume up and down, and use power button to select)

7. Select ‘update.zip to System One’ and confirm

8. Wait until 100% completion

9. Select Wipe & Reset and confirm (it’s optional, but recommended to make sure clean install). If you don’t do WIPE, the user data won’t be lost.

10. Select reboot and reboot to system one (latest)

Install Gapps

Developer ROM is not equipped with Google Apps and Services, so you need to install one your self. I spend few hours to find the installer, and finally I found one that’s working. You can download here http://ul.to/asoywry1 for your convenience.

After download, extract and run the installer (APK)

Root using update.zip

The last step was to apply the root itself. I got the file from this thread http://en.miui.com/thread-30617-1-1.html (Credit to original poster). I uploaded here http://ul.to/wfnpqb6q as well for your convenience

The steps are almost the same with steps installing the developer ROM zip. Make sure you overwrite the update.zip with root update.zip you just downloaded in the internal storage. Also, you don’t need to WIPE, otherwise you’ll lose the goggle apps again.
